THE NEXT CBC IS

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 17th, 2023

The Christmas Bird Count was started by the National Audubon Society in 1900.  Since then observers all over the world have been recording and submitting their findings each year, keeping track of species populations and locations.  The Quinnipiac Valley Audubon Society has participated in the CBC every year since December 1971 when we had 27 observers and recorded 63 bird species.  In 1998 and 2014 we observed our high species count at 96 species.

The CBC covers a 15 mile diameter circle, our circle is pictured below.  Participants are assigned an area and record each bird individual, by species, seen or heard within the circle (their area).   We also have feeder observers, where they are assigned to a yard/bird feeder, usually their own backyard.  If you are interested in becoming a CBC participant, either in the field or your backyard send us a message on our contact page.

THE NEXT BIG SIT IS

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7th, 2023

Hanover Pond, Meriden

Unlike the CBC, where we count each inividual bird, the Big Sit only records each bird species, not the number of birds.  We start
just before dawn on the shore line of Hanover Pond in Meriden.  We can only record species seen or heard from within a 17 foot daimeter.  If you would like to join us, just stop by.  We will be across from the trail parking lot on Oregon Road, next to the Quinnipiac River Watershed Association Building.
